Being in a monopoly-like position on the digital advertising market, they are indirectly able to control what kind of journalism reaches digital media users, according to a new study, published by Nordicom. To resist the power of the tech giants, media organisations, as well as countries, have to cooperate.

Challenging times for the Swedish media market

Digital advertising platforms dominate, the newspaper market has reached a new bottom and the corona pandemic caused a socioeconomic breakdown with severe consequences for the advertising market. These are some of the results from the 2020 edition of Medieutveckling – Medieekonomi, an annual report about media economics in Sweden, published by the Swedish Press and Broadcasting Authority.

The news media won’t reach gender equality for another 70 years

Women are underrepresented in the news media in almost every country in the world. If progress does not accelerate, it will be several decades before the news media reaches gender equality. These are results from a study published by Nordicom, in which a group of researchers have developed a new index, measuring gender equality in the news media.

The news media in the world will reach gender equality in 70 years

The media world is less gender equal than the “real world”. That is one of the conclusions from a research project at University of Gothenburg. A group of international scholars has analysed data from countries all over the world between 1995 and 2015 to explain the causes and consequences of women’s underrepresentation in the media.

Watch media literacy webinars on NordMedia Network

In autumn 2020, Nordicom and the Swedish Media Council co-organized a series of webinars addressing media and information literacy (MIL) in the Nordic countries: Media Education in the Nordic Countries – Lessons Learned from the Neighbours. Now, the webinar lectures can be watched on each webinar's site on NordMedia Network. NordMedia Network is a digital platform for Nordic and Nordic-oriented media researchers run by Nordicom.

Nordicom will establish a new forum to identify and coordinate researchers in MIL – media and information literacy. The venture is part of the national MIL Sweden Network launched by the Swedish Media Council upon the commission of the Government in Sweden.

Scopus has now released their cite scores for 2019. The score for the journal Nordicom Review increases substantially, from 0.8 to 1.2. The journal shows constant increase of its cite score value during the past few years.

Nordicom has joined the network MIK Sverige [MIL Sweden], coordinated by the Swedish Media Council. Media and information literacy – MIL, or MIK in Swedish – is a key competence for all ages to be able to find, analyse and evaluate media content as well as communicate and participate in debates and discussions.

On 29 May 2020, Nordicom at the University of Gothenburg presents the results of the Media Barometer 2019, the annual survey investigating the Swedish population’s media use. In addition to the main results, analyses of media use development are presented as well as preliminary results from the Media Barometer 2020, to give insight into media use during the coronavirus pandemic.
