Tech giants and telecom companies dominate the media market in the Nordics

A small number of actors account for a large share of both revenue and influence in the Nordic media markets. This is shown in a new study from Nordicom at the University of Gothenburg, which also suggests that concentration may be a prerequisite for small countries to compete globally.

Welcome to the webinar about the Media Barometer 2025!

On 5 May, Nordicom will present the results from the 2025 Media Barometer survey (in Swedish). Conducted annually by Nordicom, the survey focuses on how the Swedish population uses media on traditional and digital platforms on an average day. This year, the results will be presented at a webinar published on our website. In connection with this, the full report will also be available to download for free.

New database maps media ownership in the EU – high transparency in Sweden

The European Media Ownership Monitor maps who owns and controls leading news media in EU’s 27 member states. The database, now launched in an updated 2025 edition, makes it possible to trace ownership from ultimate owners to key decision-makers. For Sweden, the results indicate a high level of transparency and low risk, while access to reliable audience data has decreased over time.

Different levels of media trust among users of right- and left-wing alternative news media

Users of right- and left-wing alternative news media in Denmark relate differently to established news outlets. This is shown in a new study published by Nordicom at the University of Gothenburg. Users of left-wing alternative news media have lower trust in news outlets perceived as leaning to the right, while users of right-wing alternative news media display a more consistently low level of trust in established news media, regardless of political orientation.

Every year, Nordicom conducts the Media Barometer survey to understand Swedes' media habits. Invitations will soon be sent to randomly selected individuals from the Swedish population register. As a participant in the survey, you are contributing to the continuing research on Swedes' media use.

On public demand: Workshop on academic publishing for doctoral students in the Nordics

Two years ago, Nordicom organised a workshop on academic publishing for doctoral students. There was considerable interest, and significantly more than the 18 participants we were able to accommodate wanted to attend. We are now organising the same workshop again to give more doctoral students the opportunity to receive a thorough introduction to publishing in academic journals.
