Young People and Gendered Media Messages

Maria Jacobson (Ed.)

In this report, the International Clearinghouse on Children, Youth and Media directs its attention to gendered media messages. The contribution of media to the maintenance of the gender order is particularly important to study, considering the situation of children and young people, who have constant access to today’s extensive media output through a multitude of different channels. The report attempts to account for what is going on in the field of gender and media in a broad sense.

Young People, Soap Operas and Reality TV: Yearbook 2004

Cecilia von Feilitzen (Ed.)

The transformation of the traditional soap opera into certain more extreme soaps, and the emergence of the recent ‘global’ reality TV formats have whipped up storms of controversy in a great number of countries. Such programmes have also generated worries among adults about how they are received by, and may influence, young viewers – because children from all over the world watch adult programming from an early age. Since research on young people and these fictional genres seriously lags behind, the primary aim of the Yearbook is to stimulate further research on the subject.

News of the Other: Tracing Identity in Scandinavian Constructions of the Eastern Baltic Sea Region

Kristina Riegert (Ed.)

Have the changes taking place in the Baltic Sea Region since 1989 altered Cold War frameworks, Orientalist stereotypes, and sporadic news of threats and crises from the East? The studies in this volume demonstrate a startling continuity in the depiction of our eastern Baltic neighbors as fundamentally different from us, as backward or as harbingers of potential threats. The authors demonstrate that journalism is still closely tied to national perspectives of the world, which in turn is related to a broader Western discourse about the Other.

Playing with Fire: How do Computer Games Influence the Player?

Jonas Heide Smith, Simon Egenfeldt-Nielsen (Eds.)

In the debate on children, youth and computer games, the question of whether computer games are harmful is often posed. The answers provided are many and varying, making it easy to interpret the research results as contradictory. Questions concerning the harmfulness of computer games often seek simple “yes” or “no” answers, while the research reveals a more complicated picture. Different investigations also have their starting point in different perspectives and questions, which may explain the confusion.

Nordicom-Sveriges Mediebarometer 2003

Ulla Carlsson (Ed.)

The aim of Yearbook 2003, Promote or Protect? Perspectives on Media Literacy and Media Regulations, is to contribute to reflections on the whole range of 'measures' to promote children's, young people's and adults' media competence and to protect them from potential harmful media contents.

Thomas Tufte (Ed.)

This book is about belonging. It analyses media uses, media representation, globalization and cultural change. But fundamentally, it is a book about identity politics and practices of the Scandinavian societies and people. One of the largest challenges the Scandinavian societies have been struggling with during recent years is how to respond – politically, socially and culturally – to the growing number of immigrants and refugees, and their descendants, in societies traditionally conceived of as culturally rather homogeneous.
