At the turn of the year, Nora Theorin took up her new position as a researcher at Nordicom. She holds a master’s degree in political science from the University of Gothenburg and has completed both her doctoral studies and her postdoctoral project at JMG. In her research, she has focused on public opinion formation, media effects, political psychology, and migration.
“My doctoral project examined how media use affects people’s attitudes toward immigration, and in my postdoctoral project I primarily focused on how the use of social media and alternative media contributes to the formation of political identities”, explains Theorin.
She describes her time at JMG as very rewarding, both academically and collegially.
“I have really enjoyed my time at JMG – the research environment, the teaching, and not least all the wonderful colleagues. That’s why it feels especially good that I will still be working in the same building”, she continues.
Working with the Media Barometer and Nordicom Review
In her new role at Nordicom, Nora will work with the Media Barometer, Nordicom’s annual survey of the Swedish population’s use of different media. The work includes analyses and presentation of results, as well as contributing to the development of the survey’s design and content. Nora is particularly looking forward to the analytical aspects of the work:
“One of the things I enjoy most is grappling with research problems, and I look forward to producing theoretically driven research based on the Media Barometer”.
In addition, together with Magnus Fredriksson, she will serve as an editor of the scientific journal Nordicom Review.
“Nordicom’s mission is to promote and disseminate research-based knowledge about the role and conditions of the media in Sweden and the Nordic countries”, says Jonas Ohlsson, Director of Nordicom. “Nora Theorin is both a highly skilled media researcher and a valued colleague. Her expertise and commitment will help us become even better at what we do at Nordicom”.
Strengthening collaboration within the Media House
Part of her assignment will also involve initiating and developing collaborations between Nordicom, the SOM Institute, and JMG, with the aim of strengthening the research environment on media use and media effects within the Media House.
“I am used to working in large research groups and enjoy that type of collaboration. I believe this is a strength, both for the work here at Nordicom and for getting joint projects up and running with colleagues at the SOM Institute and JMG”, says Theorin.
Alongside her work at Nordicom, Nora will also continue teaching at JMG and, hopefully, work on independently funded research projects.
