Digital surveillance in everyday life is seen as a necessary evil
We live today in a digital society where surveillance is constantly increasing. States and private companies surveil us, and we surveil ourselves and each other through social media, apps, and other new technologies. We handle this through both opposition and a pragmatic approach, according to a new research anthology, published by Nordicom.
Save the date 16/5: Seminar about the Swedish Media Barometer 2022
On 16 May 2023, Nordicom presents the results from the 2022 edition of the Swedish Media Barometer [Mediebarometern] at a seminar (in Swedish) at the University of Gothenburg. The Media Barometer is an annual survey focusing on how the Swedish population uses media on an average day.
New EU database of media ownership
The EU-funded research project European Media Ownership Monitor just released a new database with media ownership data of 15 EU member states.
Magnus Fredriksson joins Nordicom's editorial team
In March, Magnus Fredriksson took on a role as editor at Nordicom. Fredriksson has a long experience as a researcher, his most recent role being senior lecturer and director of doctoral studies at the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication (JMG) at the University of Gothenburg.
Increased digitalisation and ownership concentration in the Swedish media landscape
A growing share of the Swedish population is turning away from traditional media, reduced advertisement revenues could affect citizens’ access to local news, and the ownership of the newspaper market has been concentrated to a few regional newspaper monopolies. The report MedieSverige 2023 [Media Sweden 2023] gives the reader an up-to-date and broad overview of today's Swedish media landscape.

The biggest player is the Swedish media company Bonnier's news media division: Bonnier News. Global platform companies have strengthened their financial and technological positions in the Nordic media markets over the past five years, according to the report Nordic News Media in Global Competition, which is now available in English. The report is presented today at a conference organised as part of the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Book-reading habits in a changing media landscape
A new Nordicom report investigates how digitalisation has affected the Swedish population’s book-reading habits and what they look like in different groups of the population.
