Exporting the Public Value Test: The Regulation of Public Broadcasters’ New Media Services Across Europe

Hallvard Moe, Karen Donders (Eds.)

Public service broadcasters across Europe are venturing into the digital world, launching niche TV channels, building extensive websites, developing commercial services, entering into partnerships with external actors, and exploring new ways to reach users, whether its through smart phone apps or screens in public spaces. Such endeavours intensify fundamental discussions about what we need public service media institutions for. These are complex discussions, building on history, encompassing new technology, and involving a range of strong stakeholders.

Elza Dunkels, Olle Findahl, Cecilia von Feilitzen (Eds.)

Maria Zuiderveld, Gunnar Nygren

Small Among Giants: Television Broadcasting in Smaller Countries

Christian S. Nissen, Gregory Ferrell Lowe (Eds.)

Big countries and major markets are often proposed as models for TV broadcasting everywhere. This is evident in the development of European media policies and strategic renewal. It is taken for granted that such offer suitable and desirable models for smaller countries. This book questions that assumption on the basis of empirical research. Does a media market in a country with a few million people and far less GDP have the same opportunities as countries with many times the population or wealth? Does the same logic apply in all cases?

Communicating Risks: Towards the Threat Society

Stig A. Nohrstedt (Ed.)

Communicating risks is an increasingly complicated task in contemporary society. Risks travel physically as well as discursively between continents, countries and cultures. Globalization itself has actualized new alleged risks in politics, media and public debates. Globalization and conflicts have become major issues. The growth of xenophobia and populism of various kinds has lead to dramatic changes in geographical and mental maps. In what direction globalization will take us depends on how the media portray the possibilities and problems associated with it.

Diversity in Theory and Practice: News Journalists in Sweden and Germany

Heike Graf (Ed.)

Research on media and diversity has mainly focused on content analysis, or more precisely, on how immigrants are covered by the mass media. This book concentrates on the media workers themselves, and on mass media organizations. News journalists with immigrant backgrounds responded to interview questions such as: How do journalists with immigrant backgrounds experience their working conditions, career possibilities, and their possibilities of influencing media coverage? and How does ethnic diversity contribute to a change in the media coverage?

Media Mergers and the Defence of Pluralism

Stefan Melesko, Sune Tjernström, Olof Hultén (Eds.)

Media mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have been, and continue to be, a salient feature of Nordic media markets. What once was a very fragmented and diverse industry is today consolidated to such a degree that many fear for the effects on pluralism. Internet is today the turbo charger of this process.

Media operate on a commercial market and have to survive on its terms. On the other hand, as purveyors of information and ideas, they are different from manufactured goods and services. The book springs out of this duality.

The Digital Public Sphere: Challenges for Media Policy

Hallvard Moe, Jostein Gripsrud (Eds.)

Until recently, media policy was thought of as national, media-specific, and as part of the cultural domain. All is changing in a digital public sphere: first, by the processes of globalization in a broad sense; second, by a blurring of borders between media, which can be summed up as convergence; and third, by a more far-reaching commercialisation of the media. The transformation triggered by these developments are ongoing and have been so for quite a few years. Thus, it is time to take stock. The different contributions in this book set out to do that.

In them, researchers and experts from all the corners of the world have treated a wide variety of issues from many different perspectives. The global dimension is a core principle in the work of the Clearinghouse with respect to both the content we publish and distribute and the contributors who produce it. This, the twelfth Yearbook, represents a departure from that hallowed principle of global representation.
