Media Trends in the Nordics – April issue out

| 14 April 2021

Which are the largest Nordic media companies? What challenges do the smallest Nordic media systems meet? And does the "Nordic model" really exist? Find out more in this year's first issue of Nordicom's Nordic newsletter.

Examples of content in this issue:

Telenor, Telia and Spotify are the top Nordic media companies, while Schibsted takes the lead among newspaper companies. Read Nordicom's new factsheet series, which also describes differences in media VAT in the Nordics.

The Nordic model – and whether it really exists – is examined in the Nordicom anthology Power, Communication, and Politics in the Nordic Countries, which starts by describing the political and media systems in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

The smallest Nordic media systems – the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Sápmi and Åland – are seldom in focus. Nordicom Review delves into how these media systems work and what challenges small countries and regions grapple with.

Regulation of tech giants is a hot topic – we link to the latest EU media policy news. As for the Nordics, the Danish Minister of Culture proposes that global platforms pay for Danish media content, and in Finland and Sweden, media support is on the agenda.

Examples of other news (reports in English): a DR media report analyses Danes' media use, Statistics Iceland data show drop in media ad revenues, and only 2 per cent of Nordic film and TV productions were cancelled due to the pandemic, says new research.
