Collaborations and mission

Nordicom has many partners beyond our regular projects, which are often a collaboration with another organisation. In addition, several of our employees have roles on scientific advisory boards or similar. Below is a selection of collaborations and missions that are currently ongoing. In addition to what is listed below, Nordicom also cooperates with the national statistical centres in the Nordic countries.

The Nordic Media Authorities

Nordicom cooperates with the media authority in all Nordic countries, especially when it comes to issues regarding media and information literacy and exchanging knowledge and experiences:

Denmark: Det danske filminstitut
Finland: KAVI (National Audivisual Institute)
Iceland: Fjölmidlanefnd (The Media Commission)
Norway: Medietilsynet
Sweden: Statens Medieråd

Nordic statistical network

Nordicom monitors developments in the media sectors of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden from a comparative perspective, with the purpose of documenting trends and changes in the Nordic media landscape. A great deal of Nordic data is contributed by the Danish Ministry of Culture’s Report on media development in Denmark, Statistics Finland, Statistics Iceland, and medianorway. These institutions all produce national statistics on the media and provide data online and in different reports. Read more about the network and contact persons.

Nordicom is collaborating with MILID and GAPMIL, two networks under the UNESCO umbrella. GAPLMIL stands for Global Alliance for Partnership on Media and Information Literacy, and works to ensure that all citizens have access to media and information skills. A sub-organisation for GAPMIL is MILID, which is a network for universities working with media and information literacy. MILID stands for Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue. Nordicom has published three books within the framework of MILID:

Media and Information Literacy for the Sustainable Development Goals (2015)
Global Citizens in a Digital World (2014)
Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (2013)

UNESCO Chair in Freedom of Expression, Media Development and Global Policy

Nordicom’s former director, Ulla Carlsson, has held the UNESCO Chair in Freedom of Expression, Media Development and Global Policy since 2014. The books for which Ulla Carlsson is editor are published by Nordicom. These are publications with a broad international coverage, both in terms of perspective and participating authors. Ulla Carlsson has initiated and been editor of many books, and they can all be downloaded here. An important series of publications that are based on freedom of expression are the following:

The Assault on Journalism (2017)
Freedom of Expression and Media in Transition (2016)
Freedom of Expression Revisited
Freedom of Speech Abridged? (2009)

Media & democracy

in the summer of 2017, it was clear that the Innovation and Development program Medier & demokrati [Media & democracy] would start at Lindholmen Science Park in Gothenburg. However, the discussions leading up to the program started several years earlier, and Nordicom has long been one of the program’s partners.  Medier & demokrati [Media & democracy] is a research program initiated by the industry, and they work with national issues relating to social challenges for the media.
