Childhood and Youth Culture on YouTube

The seminar will gather researchers from media studies, childhood studies and youth studies who address children and youth culture on YouTube as their object of study. We will identify key areas and trends in the current research on the subject in order to seek out possible ground for further collaboration. The seminar runs over two days and it will involve presentations of current research as well as workshops aimed at developing future projects. The first day will be initiated with a keynote address by Björn Sjöblom, Associate Professor at the Department of Children and Youth Studies at Stockholm University, followed by presentations of current research in the field and a poster session allowing for more dynamic interaction and networking. The second day of the seminar will consist of three parallel workshops dealing with 1) the media systems and business models, 2) genres and content and 3) the uses and use contexts of YouTube respectively. The workshops will be followed by a general discussion and wrap up regarding future collaboration in the field.

If you would like to participate, please send a short abstract (250 words) for posters and workshops or an extended abstract (1500 words) for presentations to annemette@thorhauge.dk and stineliv@cc.au.dk. The seminar will be free and open to all, but we might not be able to include everyone into the program on the first day. Deadline for submissions is April 1st.

Data Justice

The collection and processing of massive amounts of data has become an increasingly contentious issue. Our financial transactions, communications, movements, relationships, all now generate data that are used to profile and sort groups and individuals. With the platformisation of digital media alongside governmental and corporate uses of citizen data, developments in AI, the Internet of Things, smart homes and smart cities, the systematic collection and analysis of massive data sets across our social life is being normalised and entrenched – what has been described as the ‘datafication’ of society. This conference will examine the intricate relationship between datafication and social justice by highlighting the politics and impacts of data-driven processes and exploring different responses.
